The dreamcatcher originates from the Ojibwe people, who have a legend about the Spider Woman, Asibikaashi. As the Ojibwe Nation spread, it became difficult for Asibikaashi to protect all the children, so the women of the tribe wove magic webs to symbolize her protection. These webs would catch bad dreams and let good ones pass through.
